With Superhero movies now dominating the box offices year after year, and the quality getting better and better, every once in a while you have to stop and take time to pay homage to the originators of the genre. Adding Batman to the list of modern classics is a no-brain-er. Even though all four Superman films had already been released by the time Batman hit the theaters, Batman lived up to the huge hype, and delivered. There were many obstacles as far as public opinion goes. One: the last two Superman movies were horrid! 2: it was the summer of sequels in 1989. Indiana Jones 3, Lethal Weapon 2, Ghost busters 2, and Back to the future 2. all in the same year. 3: Michael Keaton as Batman, no one thought the comedic actor did the part justice. As it turns out, Keaton is still considered the best Batman yet. The movie did great along with all the other films that year, and, it finally opened the door to other Super hero movies. regardless of how well the Batman sequels did, the original will always be a modern classic.

The story is simple. Troubled millionaire creates alter ego, the crime fighting hero Batman to protect the city of Gotham and satisfy his own thirst for revenge for the murder of his parents. He doesn’t take the recognition that Superman does, he preferred to remain in the shadows and protect the innocent.

The plot: Batman has to battle the sinister Joker for control of Gotham city, remain anonymous, and deal with his new girlfriend in his regular life. No origins needed, we all know the story. cool gadgets, even cooler car, beautiful girl, and finally a costume that isn’t corny spandex. Once the Joker is added in by the immortal Jack Nicholson, the movie takes off and never stops. we all waited in line for hours in line to get in and cheered when it was all over.

Acting: Easily one of Jack’s best performances, His joker will go down in movie history as the greatest superhero villain of all time. Everyone else’s performances was perfect. Keaton’s best, and still the best Batman to date even though Jack stole the movie. Basinger, still the best Batman girl. Its just hard to beat the original on any level.

Final Word: You cant go wrong with this one. A must for every home library. A modern classic and definitely What-to-watch.
