Although I’m not a fan of the first film (Twilight), I thought New Moon was better in some area’s and worse in others. Being more depressing than Twilight was going to be hard. It was also much more predictable. At least there’s a little more action this time. The special effects were average as they decided to go werewolf style instead of vampire style this time around. You would have expected better with the budget they had to work with. It was much more mysterious and suspenseful when you knew they were werewolves but never really saw them. I don’t know, 10 foot tall, 500 pound werewolves made it just a little silly and overdone for me but, legions of loyal fans made the movie a huge success at the box office. So who am I to argue.

As the film picks up where Twilight left off, as we find Bella Swan – Kristen Stewart and Edward Cullen – Robert Pattinson are breaking up, which sends Bella into a long, tiring, depressive state. Bella begins seeing mirages of Edward whenever she’s in danger, trying to warn her, so decides to do anything dangerous just to see his face. When she finally begins to come out of her shell there’s Jacob Black – Taylor Lautner ready to try and swoop her off her feet and fill the void. You never really believe she is going to give up Edward for Jacob and thats where the film kind of loses it’s bite. Eventually Edward will return and the love triangle will start to cause drama (no surprises there). The film deals with love lost, friends trying to become more than friends and all the young love issues in between. I really kind of miss the vampires because the werewolves are just a bunch of wild teenagers looking for thrills and there just not that interesting. It’s always going to be team Edward and you all know it.

If my review sounds a little on the negative side it’s because the whole teenager depression thing just isn’t my cup of tea. most teens will really like this, and the true Twilight fans will love it. I do have to give praise to Kristen Stewart though, she really is the star of movie, and plays her part very well. She seems to be the only person in movie with real emotion and character. Is it what-to-watch? It sure is.

It really is nice to watch an urban drama that is not about gangs, drugs, or the rap game. I know as much as anyone, that most street dramas are about what happens on the streets, but the ex-drug dealer trying to make it off the harsh streets and out of the hood by rapping is getting old. Self Destruct manages to tell a touching but violent story of what it takes to survive when you have responsibilities to take care of but no other options available. Written, produced, and directed by Curtis “50 cent” Jackson he does a great job of keeping the film authentic while not falling into the usual street movie cliches.

50 Cent stars as Clarence, the older son in a fatherless home, trying trying to find a job and a life after blowing out his knee during the championship game of a high profile street ball tournament. Although he does land minimum wage job at local grocery store, life is just passing him by. When his mother, who holds the family together, is killed as an innocent bystander in shot out, Clarence and his younger brother Shocka must figure out how to survive day to day while grieving over their moms senseless death. When Clarence finally exacts his revenge on the boy responsible, opportunities begin to open up as he enters a whole new lifestyle that seems to be suited perfect for him.

The movie drags a little bit during the middle half hour and the acting of the mother and girlfriend leave much to be desired. Overall the movie’s pretty good. Great camera work and editing for a street movie. Jackson proves he’s a very competent director. Now in his fourth film role 50-cents acting is still developing, and in my opinion, he needs to start looking at roles other than street hustler if he intends to have that breakout performance. All in all, pretty good, I’m waiting for the sequel.

Good, but not great. Overall, a solid caper film. Travolta and Denzel lead an all star cast in a very dark and gritty hijack movie that takes place on a New York subway. Director Tony Scott uses his signature style of film making (Man on Fire, Dejavu). Unusual lighting and wild camera work to isolate and highlight actions scenes and important character issues.
Both John Travolta and Denzel Washington give strong performances as always. The movie just never really seems to hit that exceptional stride that Scott’s other movies seem to achieve.

Ryder-Travolta hijacks the Lexington line subway with a small group of heavily armed gunmen. Un-linking all the cars from the main engine car, leaving him and his crew with a packed car of hostages parked on the tracks in the most opportune spot in the tunnel. When he calls the main transit station to make his demands, he gets Walter Garber-Denzel. Garber and Ryder quickly begin to face off for control of the situation and the hostages. In an all too familiar plot standard, no one is all they seem to be. The good guys are a little bad and the bad guys are a little good. Nothing is ever black and white. The battle of force and whits continue to a sort of anti climactic ending. Don’t get me wrong, the movie isn’t bad. Its just, with this cast, you’d expect spectacular.

The acting is good, the cast is great, the action and tension are pretty good too. It just leaves you wanting so much more. Is it What-to-Watch? Sure.

Star studded, pretty good political thriller. Better than average on most fronts. It’s a good story of an aging crusading journalist who is unwillingly teemed up with a young blogger to solve the death of female assistant to a Washington senator. As in most political murder mysteries, nothing is what it seems to be, and everyone has alternative motives.

While investigating two seemingly unrelated deaths, Cal McAffrey – Russell Crowe and Della Frye – Rachel McAdams team up to begin digging into the players involved. The deeper they go, the more they find everyone is lying, motives have changed, and the conspiracy may go to the highest levels of government. Cal must deal with his friendship with senator Collins – Ben Affleck, his wife Anne – Robin Wright Penn, and his new partner. There are many juicy supporting performances, however, beginning with those of Jason Bateman as a spineless PR man pressured into revealing confidential information and Jeff Daniels as a congressman who lapses into blind patriotism and moral uprightness when threatened.

The acting is good from the whole cast. It’s dark and suspenseful and the cast is superb. It’s a good solid movie, check it out

Not for the faint of heart. Seven Pounds is a very serious, mostly adults drama about personal sacrifice and redemption. Sometimes tough to follow due the films deliberate intent to keep you guessing as to whats going on,and, what the title of the movie is supposed to mean for as long as possible. By the time you figure out the meaning of the film and its purpose, you are so engrossed, you cant wait for the final act so you can be moved to tears.

Ben Thomas – Will Smith is a treasury agent who has a list of people he needs to visit. Each person on his list has a need other than financial or monetary. Ben proceeds to embed himself in their lives, a little too much perhaps. All most to the point of becoming a nuisance. One person in particular, Emily – Rosario Dawson catches his interest, and while wearing out his welcome and being completely overbearing, manages to fall in love with her. With every ones problems in this movie, Ben turns out to be the most tortured soul in the movie. Eventually we begin to discover who he really is, and, what his true motives are.

The acting is superb. Will Smith is becoming one of the best actors of our generation. The supporting cast is equally fantastic. Rosario Dawson and Barry Pepper are just perfect. even though a little frustrating in the beginning the pay off is well worth the wait, and, the discussions after are good for the soul. Do not miss this one.

For as good as it’s supposed to be, and wants to be, it never quite fills the shoes.

You don’t compare every gangster movie to the great ones of the past, but, you have to compare this one to the greats. God Father, Good Fellas, Scarface. With these actors, and the fact that the movie is based on a true story, you would expect this one to be mentioned as the next gangster epic worthy of mention in th gangster film hall of fame. The problem is, it just isn’t great. But its good.

There are two stories going on here. The good guys and the bad guys. The good guy is Ritchie Roberts (Russell Crowe) a good cop in sea of corrupt cops in New York at that time. Ritchie who has become an outcast in his department for turning in a million dollars found in a bust. Now he tries to head a special drug division task force while also trying pass the New York state bar exam. He soon finds out who’s the real king pin in the city and sets his sights on bringing him down. The bad guy (sort of) is Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) who came from nothing as the driver for an old crime boss Bumpy Johnson. When his mentor dies, Frank Lucas moves in and begins his accent. He cant quite make an impact until he decides to go directly to the source to get his heroin. When he starts bringing back pure heroin from Southeast Asia and selling better product for a lower price, that’s when the movie really takes off. It’s good on every level, just never great. It’s slow at some points and over the top at other times. Crowe and Washington don’t really get to square off until much later in the movie and that might have hurt the film too. It’s definitely worth watching, you just want it to be so much more!

Plot: The plot is good. You cant go wrong with the story, based on the true life of Frank Lucas, set in 1970’s New York City. The rise and fall of a drug lord who ruled with an iron hand but was also a business man to the heart. The pace moves kind of slow at times but it manages to keep you interested the entire 2 hours.

Acting: Excellent, everyone in the movie is superb. You don’t even have to mention Crowe and Washington as well as many many others in the supporting cast From Clarence Williams III to Ruby Dee, and Cuba Gooding. There is one extra bright light in the film Josh Brolin. He plays Trupo, a very corrupt NYC cop. Fresh off his brilliant performance in “No country for old men” he is really the bad guy of the film and if he had more time on film, he would have stole the movie.

Final Word:It’s good in every sense of the word, all around. It is a little too glamorous at times for the bad guys but overall very entertaining. It isn’t the best gangster movie ever but it certainly is Watch-to-watch.
