Cloverfield
April 21, 2008
With all the media and Internet attention this film received prior to its release, you cant help but make the comparison to Godzilla and all the other giant monster movies over last few decades.
What makes this different is the way its filmed. Its has many of the same elements as any other monster movie. Hero’s, Heroin’s, the fight for survival, and, the monster. But this movie does something never done before in this type of movie. It is filmed with a camcorder from one the people trying to escape the path of the monster and reach safety.
Rob’s friends are throwing him a going away party. he is leaving to Japan for work soon and his friends are making goodbye testimonials on video. Their friend Hud gets the reluctant duty of filming every one’s speeches. Halfway through the party all hell breaks loose. Everyone is drawn to the roof to investigate a huge explosion in downtown Manhattan. They can all they see from miles away, something is very wrong. What looks like another terrorist attack on New York quickly brings everyone back as they flee from all the falling debris that looks like comets raining down to earth. As everyone heads outside the city plunges into chaos with everyone now trying to either escape the madness or just trying figure out what is happening! When some runs by and says “Its huge” “Its alive” that’s when the movie really takes off. Hud who has kept the camera glued to his eye to try and document everything now sticks with a small group from the party as they seek refuge. He is determined to film the entire ordeal because “people are going to want know what happened here” The movie is the journey of a small group of people trying to reach safety told from a first person prospective. This Movie seems to be one of those polarizing type films. Most people love it or hate it. Here are some the reasons why…..
Love it: Its fresh, its young. Twenty something Soho New Yorkers, all good looking, trying to make it out of the city and stick together. Filmed in Cam-corder-vision. Semi BlairWitch style only better. first person view’s are in everything now from video games to adult films, so most of today’s youth are familiar with the film style. The Special effects are amazing, period. absolutely beautiful effects, from the cities destruction to monsters themselves (yes, other monsters). The monster itself is unlike anything seen before, different, and creepy. And finally, suspense, it is very scary. The tension and suspense are very well done. In my opinion one of the best thriller monster movies ever.
Hate it: Most people did not like the filming style. filming through a camcorder is fine if its reasonably steady most of the time. This movie is about 75 minutes long and the camera never stops moving! Sometimes to the point where its tough to watch. Sometimes its down right annoying. There are points in the movie where you want to see whats going on just outside the camera’s view and you can’t. In the beginning its cool and fun, but, as the movie moves on you want to see things for more than one or two seconds. And finally, you get no answers. you don’t know anything. Where is this thing from(even a guess) where is it going, do they ever kill it. JJ Abrahams is the master at creating suspense while also creating more questions than answers
Final word: Its new, and old, at the same time. its scary and frustrating. There isn’t much plot but who cares, it delivers the goods, a scary movie. So, turn off the lights, get your popcorn, and get ready, This one is definitely what-to-watch !
