National Treasure – Book of Secrets
May 8, 2008
It’s hard to make a good sequel now a days. The first National Treasure in 2004 was good. It was fresh. It gave you a little history lesson while it took you on a fun ride. The laughs didn’t seem pressed and there was just the hint of suspense. The sequel, not so good. Just a retread of the first film. The characters are the same, The story isn’t very good, the laughs are forced, and there’s no suspense. The film is trying for a Indiana Jones/Da Vinci Code kind of thing…Nope
Ben Gates (Nicholas Cage) and his father Patrick (Jon Voight) and on another adventure to clear the family name (again). because some week evidence is brought up at a seminar showing that their great grand father may have been behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Now with his usual team of misfits along for the ride, he runs around the globe getting in and out of anything and any place with ease (regardless of the security levels) to gather clues trying to find the lost city of gold. The puzzles are not as cool and even with the bad guys hot on their heels, there isn’t much suspense. The movie never really takes off, and even with the action master Jerry Bruckheimer producing, the action is low key (or un-exciting). If you liked the first National Treasure you might want to watch this just to follow the characters. (you can catch it on cable later)
Plot: Weak, been there-done that.
Acting: Even Bringing in Heavy Hitters like Ed Harris (who I love), Helen Mirren, and keeping Harvey Kiteil in from the last one, It’s amazing how flat everyone is. Just uninspiring.
Final Word: If there’s nothing else to rent, then go ahead.
