The Mist

Most of Stephen King’s efforts recently haven’t been very good on film, but the Mist is. Of course it isn’t going to win any Oscars, and, it isn’t the best horror movie of all time, but it is a good one and it manages to deliver some really good scary moments and some some really tense ones along with one of the best endings you will ever get in a horror movie. Very scary, very gory, and some pretty good acting as well.

After a late night storm does some damage to a small town in Maine, the residents head into town to the local grocery store to get supplies, including David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his son. soon after, a very dense fog quickly rolls in to the town. Everyone is staring outside at the spectacle when a man rushes in to the store all bloodied screaming “don’t go in to the mist!, there’s something in the mist!”. As the crowd in the grocery store soon realize, there is something in this mist, something awful. But there’s also something awful inside the store as well. Mrs Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden) a very religious woman who sees this as sign from above. She quickly begins to devide the poor people into groups, believers and non believers. She is trying convince everyone that the Mist and everything in it are the wrath of God and, God needs to be satified. Soon it becomes just as dangerous inside the store as it is outside and something has to be done. As the patrons pick their sides the movie really starts to take off. The creatures in the mist aren’t going to wait forever and neither is Mrs Carmody. Why are these things here? Where did they come from? and what do we do next? A few twists and turns and one the best endings ever. This one isn’t for the youngsters.

Plot: Plot is good. Horror film genre style. you know a good majority of the cast is going to die as the movie rolls along and at times it drags a little, but not too much. Go, stay, be afraid. there are some small sub plots going on with the whole religious theme and the end of days, but I thought the plot moved along pretty good and kept my attention and suspense. One of the better translations of a Stephen King books to a film.

Acting: For a horror film, surprisingly good. Thomas Jane is pretty good and Marcia Gay Harden is great. Andre Braugher and William Sadler are exceptional. you don’t usually find performances this good in a horror film. It really helps keep the film serious when we all know it’s make believe.

Special Effects: Special effects are great. Very well done. Fantastic gore and very scary creatures. The creatures are kept from view most of the movie which is great. You get just enough to satisfy our need to see without overdoing it.

Final Word: Suprisingly good. Not your average horror film. fun and scary, and What-To-Watch!
